Changes that I Have Seen – Pedagogy of the Future

Changes that I Have Seen – Pedagogy of the Future

Because of a rather large and rapidly expanding body of knowledge which is the direct result of a considerable amount of highly valuable and useful scientific research in vocal physiology and acoustics, many of the old myths and mysteries surrounding and related to vocal pedagogy are at last being laid to rest.  They are being replaced, in most cases, with well-informed information that is now being taught quite competently by the “new generation” of voice teachers.  All things considered, I suppose that the same thing can be said when referring to modern medicine.  What sets the competent or capable teacher of singing or medical doctor apart from the truly outstanding or great vocal pedagogue or physician is artistry – that innate sixth (or possibly seventh?) sense that goes well beyond the average and which seems to defy description or complete understanding – those few who are blessed with the special skills, abilities or talents that make them undeniably unique and set them apart from that huge number of competent “others in the same field”.  With the teacher of singing, these special gifts manifest themselves in the teacher’s ability to hear more acutely, to respond more quickly, to communicate more clearly and to inspire more passionately.
